World Largest Social Networking Site Facebook has announced new anti-suicide initiative that puts those thinking of ending their lives in touch with someone via instant chat. This new service will allow users click on a link and be taken to a page where they can enter into a live chat with a suicide prevention specialist. Early this year Facebook made some changes the way people could an report fake profiles, bullying, and offensive content etc.
This new feature will be able to prevent suicides works by letting friends click a link next to a comment that they believe is a suicidal thought, and this comment is reported to Facebook, which then emails the poster, encouraging them to call a telephone hotline number or initiate a confidential text chat with someone by clicking on a link. ”One of the big goals here is to get the person in distress into the right help as soon as possible,” Fred Wolens, public policy manager at Facebook, told AP.
In a post on Facebook Dr. Regina Benjamin, the Surgeon General of the United States,” said “I’m excited about the new initiative to augment its response to potentially suicidal members by offering the opportunity for a private chat with a trained crisis representative from the Suicide Prevention Lifeline in addition to providing the Lifeline’s phone number.”
